In school we encourage children to apply their phonics to sound out unknown words and blend them together to read accurately, please help us by continuing this at home and praise ALL attempts. Please also record in the home/school diary each time your child reads to you. This skill will help them to succeed in their end of year phonics screening assessment.
We also teach children to read and spell the Year 1 Common Exception Words – these words are trickier because they cannot be sounded out.
In addition, when reading with your child please ask them to predict and retell aspects of the story to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the text. This will ensure they are reading for meaning. Reading is a skill that requires practise – the more you do, the easier it becomes!
We have P.E. every Monday and Thursday and request that your child arrives at school wearing their P.E. kit. We will be doing P.E. outside as much as possible (weather permitting) so jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt/jumper (no hoodies) should be worn over the top of their P.E. kit when it’s cold. During our P.E. lessons the children will be learning different multi skills and non-contact games.
Spellings and Homework
We will be placing homework on to Google classroom this year and all parents will receive details of how to access this. The homework will consist of up to 6 spellings to learn each week as well as another activity that your child can complete.
