Year 1 – de Hooch – Mrs Turvey/Mrs Isaacson
Welcome to de Hooch’s class page. We hope that you will find all the important information you need to know to help make your child’s time in our class as enriching as possible.
In Year 1 it is vital to hear your child read daily, but also to read regularly to your child. Please record in the home/school diary each time your child reads to you. We are building on the phonic knowledge learnt in Reception to become fluent readers. We encourage children to apply their phonics to sound out unknown words and blend them together to read accurately. This skill will help them to succeed in their end of year phonics screening assessment.
We also teach children to read and spell the Year 1 Common Exception Words – these words are trickier because they cannot be sounded out.
When reading with your child, asking them to predict and retell aspects of the story will deepen their knowledge of the text to ensure they are reading for meaning.
We have Physical Education (PE) every Monday and Wednesday. The children will be learning different multi-skills and games. Please ensure your child has the correct sports kit in school for these days. We will send home kit at the end of each half term, or sooner if necessary.
Spellings and Homework
Each child will receive up to 6 spellings to learn each week. These will be placed in homework books every Thursday. Please support your child learn these at home. In addition to spellings, a piece of maths homework will be set that reinforces maths learning from the week.
