U11 Girls Football
On Friday 15th March our U11 girls football team travelled away to a windy Holy Cross to play in the semi finals of the girls cup.
It was Holy Cross who started the brightest taking an early lead and giving us an uphill task. However all the girls dug in and very quickly Isla and Darcey began to link up and pose a threat to the Holy Cross goal.
We had set up our team to play on the counter attack with a strong defensive unit of Ray, Liana, Florence/Evie and with Hettie and Charlotte in midfield to disrupt the play and assist our 2 strikers Isla and Darcey. This tactic worked well and the defenders battled hard to win the ball and play forward to set our forwards off assisted by Hettie and Charlotte who were buzzing around in midfield Holy Cross were restricted to just a few attacks which saw our goal keepers Florence (first half) and Evie (second half) in good form to keep them out.
Up front Isla and Darcey were a lively spearhead and linked up well to set up our attacks. Eventually this pressure paid off and Darcey grabbed her first goal. This came from one of our goal kicks. A set move which saw Florence pass short to Ray who a great ball into the channel for Darcey who collected it, she then skipped past 2 defenders to fire the ball home 1-1.
The game was now a cagey affair with both teams pushing for the win and both teams mounting attacks. But both defences held firm until Darcey popped up with a magnificent solo run from the half way line to glide past defenders and clip the ball deftly into the corner of the net.
The remainder of the game continued in much the same vein with Holy Cross desperately seeking an equaliser and us looking for a third goal to put the game beyond their reach. But when the final whistle came it was Greenmount who will play in the cup final later this term.
” What an entertaining game! The girls worked very hard for this win and have earned the right to play in the cup final.” Well done to all of our players.
