Year 1 – de Hooch – Mrs Turvey/Mrs Isaacson
Welcome to de Hooch’s class page. We hope that you will find all the important information you need to know to help make your child’s time in our class as enriching as possible. Please visit often to keep informed of our latest learning and class news.
In Year 1 it is vital to hear your child read daily, but also to read to your child. We are building on the phonic knowledge learnt in Reception to become fluent readers. We encourage children to carefully sound out unknown words and blend them together to read accurately. This skill will aid them to succeed in their end of year phonic assessment. Asking your child to predict and retell aspects of the story will deepen their knowledge of the text to ensure they are reading for meaning.
In addition to reading their reading books a fantastic website is www.phonicsplay.com which has some super interactive phonics games.
We have Physical Education every Wednesday morning and alternative Monday mornings. The children will be learning different multi-skills and games. Please ensure your child has the correct sports kit in school for these days.
Spellings and Homework
Each child will receive up to 6 spellings to learn each week. These will be placed in bookbags on Friday. The children will then be ‘quized’ the following week. Please help your child to practice these regularly, both in isolation and within a sentence. You may also play games with the words, such as, making a pairs game, air writing, bingo games etc.
Homework will be set half termly and will be project based. There will be tasks for English, Maths and Science/Topic with each task being worth different amounts of points. House points will be awarded based on effort and creativity.
